BLACKOUT POETRY is poetry made from pages from already existing text.  To make Blackout Poetry, you choose specific words from the text and black out the rest.

This project was really, really fun for me.  I loved making the poem out of the words and finding the tone.  I also really enjoyed using my pastels to draw the picture.  One thing I think I could have done better was planning.  I sort of just started drawing without thinking, but it turned out nice in the end.  This was one of my favorite projects all year!

This was a practice Blackout Poetry assignment.  I am really proud of the picture, especially the lanterns, but wish I had smeared the pastels more.  For the practice poem, I felt more sure of my actions than in the real scored one, and both were very fun.

BLACKOUT POETRY

This was our second Independent Reading project.  I did mine on the book Son, by Lois Lowry- the conclusion to the Giver Series.  I especially loved the book because all the books before it were so mysterious and confusing and Son explains it all.  I enjoyed making the giant "SON" letters at the top of the poster but did not enjoy writing all the paragraphs.  I felt really unorganized writing everything.  I even rewrote my theme and character development paragraphs, which I'm very glad I did.  For next time, I will make sure to not leave all the work for last- I was up till 10:00 on the day before the project was due.
